Creating a new industrial intercom from scratch is always a unique challenge, even for a company experienced in critical communication and electronic warning systems. Our latest product, ORCANA, began exactly this way — as an idea that slowly transformed into a fully developed device now added to the Telegrafia portfolio. 

Industrial Intercom Design Process: From Sketches to a Final Concept

Once we knew what we wanted the intercom to achieve, the real work started. From the technical perspective, most of the development was already close to its final stage at this point, and ORCANA had a solid functional foundation. This article therefore focuses primarily on the creation of the design — on how a nearly finished technical platform evolved into a visually refined and user-oriented industrial intercom.  

We began with simple sketches, exploring how an industrial device should look and feel. Our goal was clear: a design that communicates durability and reliability, yet still stands out visually. We didn’t want a typical industrial box — we wanted something functional, modern and a bit surprising. Many early design concepts were created, compared, refined, or completely discarded before we found the direction that felt right. 

As the design moved forward, we also focused on materials, ergonomics, and overall usability. Choosing the right structure and surface treatment was essential to ensure long-term resilience in demanding environments. Some compromises between aesthetics and practicality were necessary, as is normal in real product development. Each iteration, however, brought us closer to the final appearance of our new intercom. 

Creating a Versatile Industrial Intercom Family

After locking in the final design, attention turned to product variants. ORCANA was envisioned as a versatile industrial intercom family, so we created multiple versions — with a handset, with a keypad, with an RFID reader, or simple button-only models. Each version required its own testing and fine-tuning, but all of them share the same design philosophy and technical foundation. 

Interestingly, the product name ORCANA arrived later than expected. Although brainstorming started early, the final name emerged only in the later phases of development. It needed to feel strong, memorable, and aligned with our brand. 

The name was inspired by Orcaella, a genus of dolphins known for their intelligence and sophisticated communication abilities — a symbolic reference to clarity, responsiveness, and reliable interaction. Once the name was chosen, the last part of the journey was designing the logo — one that would seamlessly complement the device and remain consistent with Telegrafia’s visual identity. 

Today, the development journey is complete. ORCANA has grown from an initial idea into a fully formed industrial intercom solution ready for real-world use. And as with every new product, the path from concept to final version was full of learning, refinement, and creativity.

A new addition to Telegrafia’s portfolio is the Pavian Portable electronic siren – a powerful portable siren with all the features of the flagship product mentioned above. Its main advantage is that it can be used quickly and easily in the field, virtually anywhere and anytime. It is said to be the world’s first; therefore, it is the world’s first electronic siren of its kind to provide temporary acoustic coverage and extend operational coverage with a warning signal in an endangered area. Thanks to its portability, it can quickly replace a non-functioning siren damaged, for example, by a natural disaster, or be used to control evacuation and rescue operations in the affected area.

Little technological marvel

The power of the Pavian Portable electronic siren is 600 W or 1200 W, depending on the version,  and it comes from unique lightweight aluminium-alloy loudspeaker horns designed for maximum acoustic coverage. Since the siren’s main characteristics are its high power and portability, its compactness must be reflected in all aspects: the body of the siren, i.e. its electronic part; small loudspeakers; the placement of all its components in portable cases; and an adjustable tripod. What is good is hard to stop. Many countries worldwide have already been convinced of the qualities of Telegrafia’s electronic sirens. But there are still territories that need to be covered with our company’s sound. One of them is the United States of America. However, before releasing our monkeys in America, the public must realize our products are top-notch and meet all the necessary attributes and requirements. The recently acquired UL Listed for the Pavian electronic siren has given us the green light to the US market. Pavian is officially UL Listed. What does this mean, and what has happened behind the scenes?

The UL enterprise is a global safety science leader and helps companies to demonstrate safety, enhance sustainability, strengthen security, deliver quality, manage risk, and achieve regulatory compliance. That means that whatever companies aim to bring to the American market should meet certain specifications according to the relevant standards. UL inspects and tests products, and once they pass the certification process and become UL Listed, customers can be sure that all required standard specifications are met. In a nutshell, customers needn’t worry about the quality of materials, their properties, safety features, or the quality management of the entire manufacturing process. In addition, all products that are UL Listed are regularly inspected. The standard for Telegrafia’s Pavian electronic sirens is UL464A – Audible Signal Appliances for General Signalling Use. So which tests did the Pavian siren have to go through before it received a UL Listed status?

The UL test programme is designed to verify almost all product features that fall within the product category of the relevant standard. There are more tests than just checking the necessary documentation, which probably can’t be fully provided and described in detail here. Basically, Pavian had to prove what was claimed by the manufacturer. For example, it passed the moisture resistance test indoors and outdoors. It was also tested in rain, varying temperature conditions, and for vibrations. Its durability was proven in falls and flames. The siren was subjected to surge and burn-out tests.

It seems our “monkey ” – the Pavian siren – has been trained to perfection. The complex and time-consuming testing time is over, and the siren is now ready to prove its qualities beyond the Pond. Communication is the secret to success if you learn to understand and use it effectively. You don’t have to do much this time. Technology will do all for you, or at least most of what is necessary. One of the essential components of warning systems is the communications infrastructure. It maintains communications between sensors, control centres and sirens, and possibly other elements within the system, using diverse types of communication channels.

Parallel channels should serve as a backup in case one of the channels fails or stops working. It is recommended that at least one of the channels used for a warning system should be exclusively private to the organisation operating the warning system. Although more complicated to build, a private channel usually provides advantages if there is a public communications network failure or power outage. These factors are significant in emergencies when warning systems must work at all costs. The most commonly used private communication channel is the radio.

An increased interest has been recently shown in digital radios, which offer several advantages over their analogue counterparts. The most important include greater security, parallel multiple-channel communication, and faster data transmission. The disadvantages include a more complicated configuration and a higher purchase price.

After Telegrafia and Motorola collaborated on the Mototrbo digital radio, Telegrafia decided to venture into Tetra (“Terrestrial Trunked Radio”) networks. Defined by the European standards, these belong to the group of professional digital radios and are designed specifically for the needs of government authorities, rescue teams, industrial and transport facilities, and the military. Thanks to standardisation, Tetra networks contain different stations from various manufacturers. It is thus common for base stations to be supplied by one manufacturer and endpoints by another.

The market for warning systems works with Tetra radios from several manufacturers. Telegrafia decided to collaborate with two of the largest manufacturers – Sepura and Motorola. Collaborations with such companies involve an arduous and highly complicated approval process in which very few succeed. Telegrafia is proud to be one of them.

As Telegrafia makes the most advanced electronic sirens, no add-on modules are necessary to provide the Tetra radio communication. The Pavian and Gibon sirens can do the job without any additional hardware. The possibility of connection and control via Tetra radio is guaranteed by a licence, which is implemented in each siren and without which customers cannot use this communications option.

It is also excellent and convincing proof that Telegrafia’s sirens are software-defined. Their functions are thus limited by software rather than hardware, for the siren hardware was designed right at the heart of the company and can withstand nearly everything.

And it is thanks to the collaborations mentioned above that Telegrafia can penetrate other new markets with exclusively its own modules. Otherwise, it would have been necessary to rely on other integrator companies to create a connection method for Telegrafia’s sirens. This way, the company controls the whole chain and can enter quite a wide range of projects. For example, the German market is very specific in this respect. The latest local requirements define that sirens must be connected to the Tetra BOS network, a high-security network to which no radio will connect without a special SIM card. This network is used for warning systems, police, rescue, and other community services where the highest possible level of security is a prerequisite.

Most recently, the company has completed testing sirens controlled by the Vektra® software application in the Tetra BOS network.

In close collaboration with Piciorgros, Telegrafia would shortly like to develop a small Tetra radio and thus replace the currently used analogue radio with a modern solution suitable for other private projects requiring a digital radio but not necessarily the SIM card security. Compared to conventional radio, this radio is about a third in size.
