Wildfires, as a catastrophic phenomenon, have existed for centuries, but in recent decades they have occurred more frequently and have had a more devastating impact in various parts of the world, causing enormous environmental and economic damage, as well as loss of human life. 

In the last 10 years alone, we have witnessed several devastating fires around the globe: 

• United States (2025) – In January 2025, California experienced devastating wildfires, notably the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles County, which destroyed thousands of homes and caused over $1 billion in damages. The fires claimed the lives of at least 29 people and displaced thousands of residents.
• Chile (2024) – The largest natural disaster in Chile in recent years, with devastating consequences in terms of deaths and material damage. The fires claimed the lives of 136 people and destroyed over 16,000 homes.
• Greece (2018) – The wildfire in Greece was highly destructive, affecting areas near Athens, where 102 people lost their lives, and the fire destroyed more than 2,000 hectares. This fire was one of the most destructive in the country’s recent history.
• United States (2018) – “Camp Fire” Over 620 km² were burned, including the city of Paradise, which was nearly completely destroyed. It left 85 dead, becoming the deadliest wildfire in California’s history. This fire destroyed more than 18,000 buildings, left thousands homeless, and had a significant psychological and economic impact on the region.
• Portugal (2017) – This fire was one of the deadliest in Europe, especially affecting central Portugal. The fire ravaged large areas of forest and affected several villages, causing 66 deaths due to the rapid spread of the fire. High temperatures and lack of resources to control the fire worsened the situation.
• India (2020) – This fire occurred primarily in the state of Madhya Pradesh and affected large areas of forest. It caused significant damage to ecosystems and displaced thousands of people, leaving 50 dead.
• Australia (2019-2020) – The wildfires in Australia during 2019-2020 were known as the “Red Season” or “Black Summer,” a term referring to the scale and devastation of these fires. They burned over 18 million hectares of land, approximately 3% of Australia’s territory. At least 33 people died as a direct result of the fires.
• Amazonia, Brazil (2019) – Approximately 2.5 million hectares, mostly tropical rainforest, were burned, raising global concerns about the protection of this crucial ecosystem. The Amazon wildfire caused three human deaths.
• Canada (2016, 2023) – The year 2023 saw a higher number of fires and a larger affected area overall, but the 2016 fire was one of the most destructive in terms of local impacts (damage, evacuations, concerns for residents’ lives). 88,000 residents were evacuated.

1. Prevention – Regulation of fire use in natural areas, timely removal of dry vegetation, and public education. 
2. Early monitoring – Monitoring of fires using satellites, drones, and local early warning systems. 
3. Population alert system – Use of acoustic warning systems, such as Pavian CAR and Pavian Portable sirens, which can warn the population in time and allow for a quick evacuation. 

Acoustic warning systems are key to quickly informing the population in the event of an imminent fire. After two thousand pages, you might stop and realize how bad the actual situation is. Okay, that last-mentioned fact is only possible, but to prevent it, an enormous reduction in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is necessary for the coming decades. People are often told to start from themselves. However, the process of restoring the health of the planet is a long chain, and if some of its components do not work well with others, the goal cannot be reached. The world, individuals, their thinking, society, governments, multinational corporations must change, and preferably in the opposite order. So, let’s be it.

Preparing for the Growing Frequency of Extreme Weather and Natural Disasters

Until then, we will have to get used to nature becoming increasingly unpredictable. Extreme weather events will become more frequent, and their consequences will be more devastating. Disasters in the form of floods, cyclones or tornadoes will occur regularly, and record temperatures will stay record only for a single year. Humans have already fought for food against animals, for freedom, territory, or ideology against each other. Now we are fighting for our own lives and the life of our planet against the weather and our egos.

The most recent earthquakes in Haiti, floods in Germany, fires in Siberia, Greece or Turkey, inland tornadoes in Central Europe, and extreme heatwaves in Canada are only a few telling examples of how acute the problem is. The whole world is in training mode. In addition to tackling warming issues, it is also looking for the best ways to protect its inhabitants from largely unavoidable disasters. Engineering miracles are being produced, thanks to which people can better adapt to the dark side of the weather. But million-dollar projects require years of work, and it is time that is currently working against us.

The largest Canadian refinery located in Saint John, New Brunswick, is capable of producing more than 320,000 barrels gasoline, diesel heating oil, jet fuel and other petroleum products. Irving Oil exports more than half of that supply to the United States. The refinery is situated in an area with lots of neighbourhoods and employs 1,400 workers, according to the Irving Oil’s website.

A massive refinery blast shook the historic ports city on Monday, October 8th, 2018. The flames and smoke could be seen from a great distance from the refinery, on the city’s east side. The residents registered the explosion shortly after 10 a.m. The Irving Oil and the Saint John’s Fire Department crews extinguished the fire and stabilised the situation at the refinery at about 6 p.m. At least four contractors were sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to Irving Oil’s authorities, there had been a malfunction in the refinery’s diesel treating unit, where sulphur is removed from diesel fuel. It was the second explosion at the Irving Oil refinery, the first one happened in 1998 when one person was killed, and two more people suffered minor injuries in the blast.

The refinery is less than five kilometres away from the city centre, and it is surrounded by residential communities. Several streets were closed down, hundreds of residents were looking on from a distance as the situation unfolded, and the regional hospital was preparing, expecting an influx of patients. No evacuation order was issued for the area of residents; however, there was an order to shelter in place for anyone living in the direction of the plume.

Even though the evacuation was not required in this unfortunate event, the people were scared and remained uninformed.
