Use of Electronic Sirens at Airports and Shooting Ranges

Use of Electronic Sirens at Airports and Shooting Ranges

The use of warning sirens is most frequently associated with natural disasters (such as fires, floods, and other similar emergencies) or with dangerous human-made events (gas or chemical leaks, for example). However, modern electronic sirens offer more than a warning. The reproduction of pre-recorded sounds or live announcements does not always have to warn but also inform or perform another, creative function. Airports and shooting ranges became the first users of these sirens for combined purposes.

Sirens at a shooting range provide information and improve the atmosphere

Sirens do not need to sound only in case of an emergency. Many shooting ranges use siren signals as a warning before the beginning of shooting or frightening away birds that could be accidentally caught in the shot. It is also possible to use sirens at sport target shooting competitions. In addition to a warning signal, such sirens can play pre-recorded sounds, using standard formats (mp3/WMA) stored in the device’s internal memory, or deliver live messages through a microphone. The sound quality of today’s devices is outstanding; the sound is perfectly intelligible, and the transmission undistorted. Moreover, a single powerful siren has massive signal coverage.

Besides the information role, modern electronic sirens find a lot of other, more creative applications. Their sound can improve the atmosphere in different environments. Paintball and airsoft arenas can create an adrenalin rush for players. Sirens can play light or mood-inducing music in amusement parks and stadiums or be used to announce results in sports competitions. And, if necessary, they will also serve in case of an emergency or evacuation.

Sirens at an airport quickly deliver information all around

Public and military airports of all sizes and types can use sirens in several different ways. For example, in 2016, Telegrafia programmed and installed a 1200 W Gibon siren at the Slovak military base Malacky-Kuchyňa. Again, it combines several functions such as warning, frightening birds away, reproducing messages and notifying before shooting. Every event is signal-specific, so the dissemination of information is fast and reliable.

The combination of warning and information signals (about weather changes, traffic announcements or other emergencies) can be easily programmed and operated. If an airport is not able to cover the signal from a single powerful siren, which is mostly placed on the control tower, it is possible to use a system of interconnected sirens. Siren diagnostics is silent, so testing sirens at civil airports, for example, will not spread panic among passengers.

Many functions in one device

At shooting ranges, airports and other similar areas, modern electronic sirens send both a warning and a simple message. Besides, they offer numerous other benefits:

  1. Configurability: Different types of warning sounds or pre-recorded announcements can be programmed to satisfy clients’ requirements; the siren power and other functionalities are also adjustable.
  2. Smooth operation: Voice announcements can be stored in the siren’s internal memory, or broadcast live using a microphone, radio, or a telephone.
  3. Autonomy: A siren is a standalone device and does not need to be connected to any security software.
  4. High resistance: All sirens in Telegrafia’s portfolio are made of such materials that can withstand extreme conditions like high humidity, winds, and high temperatures. Power is reliably supplied to the sirens from batteries (and possibly from solar panels) with no special maintenance requirements.

The sirens installed at airports and shooting ranges under the Telegrafia brand have proven their high quality and can clearly indicate that sirens are no longer intended only for warning purposes. The combination of warning and information system functions in one device simplifies operation and significantly saves costs.
